Best time to Travel to Bhutan
The Land of the Thunder Dragon
Bhutan is beautiful throughout the year, and each season offers a different experience. The ideal time to visit depends on what you would like to enjoy, whether it is pleasant weather, colourful festivals, mountain views, trekking, nature, or a quieter and more affordable holiday.
Spring (March, April & May)
Spring is one of the most beautiful seasons in Bhutan. The weather is generally pleasant, and the valleys come alive with colourful flowers. Rhododendrons, azaleas and many other wildflowers cover the hills and make the countryside especially beautiful.
There may be some clouds around the mountains, but the beautiful landscapes and blooming flowers make up for it. Spring is also a wonderful time to experience Bhutanese culture and festivals, including the famous Paro Festival.

Summer (June, July & August)
Summer brings warmer temperatures and fresh green landscapes. The valleys become lush and beautiful, with alpine flowers blooming in the higher areas.
This is also the monsoon season, so rainfall can sometimes affect trekking and outdoor activities. However, rain is often limited to short periods, particularly in western Bhutan. Places such as Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and Haa can still be explored during this season.

Autumn (September, October & November)
Autumn is one of the most popular seasons for travelling and trekking in Bhutan. After the monsoon, the skies become clearer, the air is fresh, and the Himalayan mountains can often be seen in their full beauty.
The countryside is particularly scenic as rice fields turn golden during the harvest season. It is an excellent time for photography, sightseeing and outdoor adventures. Major celebrations such as the Thimphu Festival and Jambay Lhakhang Drup also take place during this period.

Winter (December, January & February)
Winter brings clear, sunny days and crisp mountain air. Temperatures can be cold in the evenings, especially at higher elevations, while the main valleys remain suitable for sightseeing.
Some high-altitude trekking routes may be covered with snow, but winter is a peaceful time to explore Bhutan’s towns, monasteries and valleys. It is also the season when the rare black-necked cranes arrive in Phobjikha Valley after migrating from the Tibetan Plateau.

For travellers looking for a quieter experience, fewer crowds and potentially lower travel costs, winter can be an excellent choice.

There is no single perfect month to visit Bhutan. Every season has something special to offer.
